Founded by our owner Jon Chadwick in 2014, and born out of a passion for craft spirits inspired by America’s East Coast drinks scene, we initially launched with our signature Durham Gin; a distinctively unique gin with a spicy and savoury character using Celery seed, Pink peppercorn and Elderflower. In winter 2018, we are moving to a new distillery in the heart of Durham city, where alongside our award-winning gin and vodka products, we will also be producing the North East’s first ever single malt whisky. Using local spring water and malt we will be creating a true grain to glass whisky from mashing and fermenting through to a double distillation on two custom built copper pot stills, a 1200L wash still and a 1000L spirit still.
WE WANT TO BE LEADERS AND PIONEER A NEW WAY FOR PEOPLE TO EXPLORE AND EXPERIENCE CRAFT SPIRITS.
Our distillery will be a place where people come, not just to enjoy our spirits, but to learn about the science of the distilling process and craft behind their making, as well as how to drink them and importantly, to share in our enthusiasm and passion. Our aim is to show people precisely how spirits are made – nothing hidden, no tricks and no mythologising. Our new distillery will feature a range of informative and interactive tours, and showcase our finest drinks by the glass or bottle through public and private events; all with the impressive backdrop of our working distillery, custom lauter tun, towering stainless steel washbacks and handmade copper stills.
WE PRIDE OURSELVES ON THE FACT THAT WE ARE CEMENTED WITHIN THE ROOTS OF DURHAM.
Our brand identity incorporates elements of the city - our logo was inspired by Durham Cathedral’s Medieval Rose Window, originally glazed in the 15th century by Richard Pickering and is commonly referred to as the greatest example of Romanesque architecture in Europe. It is a breathtaking way to allow more light into the Cathedral and casts dappled colourful sunlight onto the stone floor. Whilst, our brand colour palette takes touches from the ecclesiastical purple from the Bishop’s vestments. The river completes the city as an island, and in years gone by, made it a fortress; an independent medieval city state ruled by the Prince Bishop. The bridges are the ways into the city over the river, and any journey through Durham involves crossing them. In the same way that the bridges provide access to the city, our bridge packages offer a route for everyone to support the distillery and be part of creating something truly special in the heart of it.
